I am stumped. I hope some of you with experience in this area can shed some light for me.
I will be 50 in a few months. My body's going through the motions of menopause, some of the "symptoms" I'm not aware of but find out as I experience them.
About a month ago, my doc put me on a high blood pressure medication (tenoretic). Within two weeks of beginning that med, I have gained so much weight that none of my slacks or blouses fit any more. I haven't changed my eating habits; if anything, I'm eating less. I looked up the side affects of my med and it said if I experience sudden weight gain and shortness of breath (which I have a bit of) to call my doctor. Doctor (primary doctor, not my ob/gyn)said it wasn't the meds (don't know what he based it on) and that I was probably eating more. I'm just about ready to show said doctor what a mood swing is, but I thought I'd think about what I'm going through first and then decide on what to do.
Having said ALL that, I was wondering if it is yet another undiscovered (by me) side affect of menopause to gain weight that fast (thyroid?).
Boyfriend and I have biked 55 miles since Sunday and I feel great....just fat.
any help/ideas appreciated.

Wow Judy, congrats on the mileage on the bike. Dang, I feel good if I can make it 5 miles.
I think you need to look into the side effects of that medicine again. I don't know how your doctor could be so sure it wasn't that when it was listed as one of the side effects. I know you ride your bike a LOT, so unless you are really pigging out, (and I know you're not) you shouldn't have major weight gain like that.

It funny that happened to you. I am going through menopause and about 1 month ago, my doctor put me on blood pressure pills. The first ones I took a Beta Blocker, gave me a sore throat and I immediately stopped taking them. She gave me another that seems to be working. I never had problems with my pressure!!! With all that biking you would think that your pressure would be down. I'm having mine checked at the gym too. Its this menopause. I heard its a given 10 lbs. and I believe it. I've been on WW now for a month and have lost 7 lbs. give or take!!
What does lack of estrogen raise the blood pressure?

I've been there and done that as far as the menopause thing. I didn't gain weight, and my blood pressure didn't go up either. Rather than hormone replacement, I opted for soy. I took soy capsules everyday and it cut out the hot flashes and all the other little nasties that went with it - mood swings, etc. I think I would have the doctor rethink the side effect thing. At least tell him you'd like to try another pb pill to see if it clears it up. JMHO. Congrats Judy on the miles logged on the bike. You should be skinny as a rail.

Wow, I've heard of weight gain due to menopause but I haven't heard about a gain so much in 2 weeks that you don't fit into your clothes anymore :\
I hope you've seen the doctor about this!
