Step II

Today I begin step II on the patch. Hard to believe that I have made it to day #42 without a single puff. I have noticed that over the last two days or so I have gotten some strong urges. I had gone a week or so without any urge at all and then all of the sudden, "bam" as Emeril would say. I took it in stride not letting it upset me. I knew if I could beat the urges back in week one the urges in week six would not be as difficult. And they weren't as difficult, the urges passed just as they passed before.
Thanks again everyone for all your help. I wish to all peace, joy, and happiness for the New Year. May God bless you all and keep you safe. Happy New Year. John
I have been quit for 1 Month, 1 Week, 4 Days, 20 hours, 24 minutes and 1 second (41 days). I have saved $197.72 by not smoking 1,129 cigarettes. I have saved 3 Days, 22 hours and 5 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 11/19/2004

Going down a step can be very frightening for some people. You sound like you are handling it very well, CONGRATS!

You're awesome John. If step II proves to be a challenge, you can always go back to setp I for a while. There's no shame in that. I'd rather see you step back than light up. I don't think you will though. You're very strong in this your last quit. You truly are an inspiration. The very best to you in this new smoke-free year.

Patti, I am on day two of the 14mg patch. I am feeling a little nervous. I took the patch off before bed and that I think affected me because I couldn't fall asleep. I think with the lower dose my body was making an adjustment. I put the patch on at 3:15am and fell asleep shortly after. I was able to take off the step 1 patch before bed time for about 10 days or so with no problems, however, not so I think with step two, so I will wear it through the night for a while and then try taking it off. I have no more step 1 patches, but I was thinking about getting some extra step two patches and step 3. I was thinking about extending my program by one month to get me to Spring Break where my responsibilities will be much less and I will have a good solid 9 days to get rid of any nicotine left in me (when I stop step 3). Please let me know what you (or anyone else) think\s? God bless, John

John, I found I had trouble sleeping with the step 1 patch too. Once I switched to the step 2, I have no more problems sleeping and leaving it on all night.
I guess everyone's different and we'll each take as long as we need. I had anticipated a shorter program on the patch since things went so well for me. But I'm finding I was overly optimistic and will probably have to extend my time on the patch too.
Good luck and happy new year.

Hey John, I can't help you with the patch thing because I wasn't able to use them. I just want to congratulate you on your quit. You have a great attitude, you have a game plan and you WANT to succeed. It all adds up to a non-smoker as of the first day you put that first patch on. Congratulations my friend, keep up the great quit!

John, whenever I go down a step I wear the patch for the first few days at night to build up my levels a little as I adjust to the lower dose then after a week or so I stop wearing it at night and plop it on first thing in the morning. I'm on 7mg. I've been using the patch for 4 mths. I go down when i feel the time is right and I'm ready. i don't worry about the proposed timelines. I figure a little nicotine is nothing compared to all the nicotine plus the 200 other toxins not to mention the smoke, gasses, tar etc. in cigerattes. A friend of mine used the patch for a year and her doctor told her he has a patient that's been on it for years and he supports him as it's better than smoking. Not the ideal, agreed, but i figure i'm in the fight of my life and I'll do whatever it takes to win this battle. Take all the time you need. It's an individual process.

You're right Sandy. Do all needed to quit. Get the smoke out first . Smell the flowers. Without the nose smoke, the environment becomes alive, aromas appear again. I could smell the hot asphalt, the damp rained on earth, the honeysuckle.....an awaking, if you will, to times I had forgotten.
The patches will be unnecessary eventually. For now, record all the good feelings of freedom from cigarettes.
