I read in another post that you are going off the patch today. I just wanted to say that we are all here cheering you on. Keep us posted on the progress. I'm glad that you have an open mind about putting on the 7mm patch if things get too rough for you. It sure beats lighting up.

hey john,
i agree with gracie. you can make it with or without the patch. when i started my quit, i worked down from the most powerful patch to the weakest and then none. i will be honest though, i kept the most powerful patch in my back pocket for some months. JUST IN CASE> it is your quit so do not let the darn nicobeast steal it from you. he is very decietful if you are not on your guard. we are all with you.

John, I think it's awesome you're brave enough to try going without the patch. Hope it goes well. And you're right that there's nothing wrong with admitting if you need a little boost occasionally from a patch.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks everyone. I tried to go without the patch and "OH BOY" I was a mess at night. WIDE AWAKE and a little nuts during the day. Well I went back to the patch 7mg and feeling better. My original plan was to go until spring break with the 7mg patch but I got a little brave and tried early. I will experiment here and there leaving it off during the day as much as possible and then putting it on late afternoon - early evening so I can get some good sleep.
I will keep you all posted. I do feel very good, in the sense that I have made it this far. Urges come and I win, simply by refusing to give in. This has given me momentum and confidence, but I must admit I fear removing the patch because of it (nicotine withdrawls both physical and psychological) keeping me awake. Well the St. John's wort says it takes approx 3 weeks to kick into a natural cycle and to have a full effect, so I will begin a steady regimen of that which will lead me up to Spring break when I take the patch off.
If any of you have advice please share. Thanks again, and proud to say still smoke free and going strong for 2 Months, 1 Week, 3 Days, 10 hours, 23 minutes (71 days). Saved $337.51 by not smoking 1,928 cigarettes. Saved 6 Days, 16 hours and 40 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 11/19/2004

John you are doing so good, and if you need that patch for awhile, who cares the point is you are not smoking those filthy cigs. Way to go John!!! I am not sure on the sleeping thing, last night I was up all night tossing and turning but it was in anticipation of my quit today. So I hope it gets better. We can do this. I cant wait till I can say 2 months like you. Karyn

John, I know what you mean about the "going a little nuts during the day." That's how I get without a patch and on the 7 mg patch. There's nothing wrong in admitting you still need an aid. It sure beats smoking!
I'm glad I havent read the instructions on the St. John's Wort. I get instant relief on one capsule and just take as needed. Probably when I'm ready to try going without a patch, I'll end up taking more each day.
But you are doing so great. I love the confidence you've gained and are showing since I first started reading your posts. Keep up the great work!

Hey John! I cut my 7m patch in half. That's where I am now. 5 mths tomorrow. It may be the slowest withdrawal in history but who cares. I'm in this for the long run. Do what works. No need to rush things. Funny thing about the St. Johns Wort. I tried it once and it really bummed me out, some kind of paradoxical effect-go figure....

No need to rush things. Funny thing about the St. Johns Wort. I tried it once and it really bummed me out, some kind of paradoxical effect-go figure.... Was it NicoDer...? I am very resolved to keep my quit even if it means stying on the patch for an extended period. I know its still nictoine, but its now where near as dangerous as smoking. I may even look into a 5mg patch after I finish the 7mg, but I will try again to go with out the patch for a few days towards the end of Feb. If all goes well I will continue to be off the patch at that time, but if I still need it I will slap on the 5mg for a couple of weeks. I know its ideal to be free of everything, but I have to take my baby steps first. Thanks again, God bless, John

John, It's just a generic Life brand from Shoppers DrugMart. I've never seen a 5 mg. patch. I've only seen the 21,14 and 7. They should have a 5 or 4. It makes sense. Good Luck to you! Don't worry about a little nicotine compared to the 200 plus chemicals in cigs plus the tar, carbon dioxide etc. etc
