Quitting Smoking - The Three Golden Rules
Rule One: LOVE Yourself.
A quit made out of self-hate will never last. Self-hate is what kept you smoking. You must quit and keep your quit out of self-love. Be gentle to yourself. Be patient with yourself. Remember that you are enduring this small pain now because you care about yourself - you want to give yourself a great reward of happiness and freedom later.
Rule Two: LISTEN to Yourself.
Quitting smoking brings up a lot of negative emotions. Often we have a 4-year-old inside our heads who is terrified of losing his/her security blanket. She/he can scream with anger, break down with terror, turn icy and cold in denial, sob with exhaustion, even refuse to tell us what is bothering them as they pout in silence. Find out what he/she wants. Take a quiet moment and see what's really going on.
Rule Three: LET Yourself Believe That You CAN do it.
Do whatever it takes to make yourself believe. Sometimes we need to simply say "I can do it" over and over. Allow faith in your own strength to bubble up from the well that lies within. You must believe that you CAN do this, no matter what. Self-doubt will make you miserable and crazy - fight it as hard as you can. Self-confidence takes time to build, but at the beginning a little goes a long way. As you achieve, you will believe.
