Someone asked for words of wisdom. I remember reading in a recent post about someone who "just threw the cigarettes away and never smoked again." Someone else replied, "If only it were that easy."
It's been a real hard road coming to this point, but folks... IT REALLY IS THAT EASY!
All we have to do is throw away the smokes and never smoke again!
It's the simplest and hardest thing I've ever done and am still doing, but it still boils down to that simple concept.
How we get there is personalized to each of us. But, if we don't TRY. And, if we don't allow failure to be an option, then we will achieve it. Just throw the cigarettes away and never smoke again. Why would you anyway? You're a non-smoker and non-smokers just don't do that!
Had a bad day? A fight with a spouse? A loved one in the hospital or, heaven forbid, passed away? A car accident? Lost a job? Gained weight? Etc., etc., etc.
Which one of those things is going to be made better by lighting up? If you truly believe that (pick one: your life is going to be better, you'll make up with your spouse, your loved one will recover, the car will unbend itself, the boss will call and offer you a better job) if you light up, then please call me and I'll buy you the pack.
But, we all know that smoking won't help any of those things or the millions of other things that we use to tell ourselves that we must have one. We are all great liars! We lie to ourselves most of all when we give a cigarette so much power over us and then we lie some more to justify it. Sometimes we lie to those we love to hide it.
And that brings up the hardest part of quitting. Being honest with yourself. You have to admit that you're an addict and face down all the lies you have lived and told over the years. All the excuses. You have to look that addiction in the face and say you will NOT control me anymore!
The nicorette, the patches, the gum, the cinammon sticks, this board, etc. they are the crutches that prop us up while we cut the legs off of our dishonesty. All of these things help to hold us up while we learn to stand on our own again.
We were not born with cigarettes in our mouths. We don't need them. All we have to do is just throw them out and never smoke again.
And drink lots of water
