I'm confused. Is it the nicotine that is harmful or is it the poisons that are put in the cigarettes that are harmful?
And if nicotine is harmful (by itself without the help of the added poisons they put in cigarettes), why is it safe to use nicotine patches and other aids. Some are even going so far as to say you could stay on nicotine patches etc. for years.
And what is going on with chewing tobacco. Do they contain poisons too which are the harmful elements or is it the nicotine.
Can someone please straighten me out? I've done some research on the net but can't seem to get an answer. My searches seem to mix nicotine with smoking.
Thank you.

I'm certainly no chemist but I'm thinking nicotine and the other hundreds of chemicals in cigarettes are combined to intentionally turn a human into a junkie. The junkie in us keeps the money flowing which in turn keeps the tobacco companies in the chips. Nicotine (as I understand it) is one of the most concentrated and powerful drugs on earth. A pure dose of nicotine (the size of a pin point) will kill a human. It's no wonder we become so addicted to cigarettes. I'm sure the tobacco company chemists are proud of themselves. The patch controls the dosage of nicotine and eliminates the other chemicals that promote addiction. I've never heard of the possibility of staying on the patch for years. (But I'm sure the drug companies would enjoy the patronage).
It's my understanding the lung's constant exposure to 'smoke' causes disease. The lung's capacity to process the air we breathe is gradually diminished to the point where we're just no longer able to inhale. The nicotine and chemicals in tobacco provide the 'taste', euphoria, and sustain the addiction.
Chewing tobacco.....foul chemicals applied directly to any tissue is bound to create wounds, sores, and disease. It seems to me that it's only a matter of time before it begins to take its toll. Chewing that crap is just another way to commit assisted suicide.

I take it that it will be similar to heroin addicts - who use methodone is it and they stay on that or the rest of their lives - in that they will use nicotine patches etc. in stead of smoking. This got me wondering if nicotine in itself is not harmful but only the additives they put in the cigarettes....
Anyhow, that is another can of worms and we'll just take one can at a time right? I'm off cigarettes and that's enough.
Thanks for the reply Bubb.
