When I quit before, I gained 30 lbs in 3 months. I don't care that much about how I look fat, but as I've always been a little person, I felt like I was toting around an extra body! That wasn't the reason I started back again, but for many people it can be. Strangely enough, I've lost a couple of pounds the past 2 weeks. I'm trying to be very aware, not of what I'm eating, but how much. 6 or 7 small meals a day seems to satisfy both my hunger and that darned oral fixation. Hope I can keep this up, because at my age, one just isn't able to physically work off weight.

Hi Dot,
I'm trying to increase my walking, swimming and exercising to get rid of the extra weight. I'm short, too, and even 5 pounds is alot of extra weight. Before I quit, I was a size 4 ~ but, like I said, smoking unnaturally keeps the weight off.

I was very thin when i quit....6 ft 160 lbs....cause i never ate for goodness sakes. I smoked and drank coffee...how long was i going survive doing that??? Anyways, the oral fixation of food and drinks(water mostly) was very high for me quitting cold turkey and all...so i put on about 30 lbs in the first few months. Today, I am still 6ft for the time being, and 180lbs. My doctor says i'm perfect!! so i agreed. :-) but i still feel heavy...i do some exercise but i need to it more consistantly...and so there is the key...right. perhaps i could take off that 5 lbs that bug me. for what it's worth....i would rather be a bit overwieght and not smoking than smoking and skinny. Over time i think we all will level off and find our way.

I gained about 10 pounds when I quit which doesn't seem like much, but nothing fit, even my ring! That 10 pounds took 2 months and it took about 4 months to get it off. I have been dieting, eating vegetables, fruits, organic whole wheat etc. and nothing! I just couldn't get rid of it. Then at the beginning of this month, I started working out each morning and especially jogging on the spot - really started the thing going. I am getting back to my pre-quit self but not quite there yet. I use my Port's belt as a measuring stick. I got it when i was about 30 and you can see the knotches as the years pass. I started with the first hole and pre-quit was using the second to last and sometimes the last hole. In December I could barely put the belt around my waste! I felt like a beached whale for heaven's sake. This morning, I tried it on and I'm back to the second to last hole. I'm goingto go for the third to last. I have two pairs of jeans - one really tight and other other baggy - and the baggy ones are/were tight! Forget the tight ones. So, I tried those on this morning and they are getting better but I'm not there yet.
I think I read somewhere that you do hit a plateau and then you keep going and it sheds again. So I had plateaued for awhile there and almost despaired but kept going and now I am losing the weight and firming up.
I was slim too before I quit but took the lazy way as I didn't have to exercise. Quitting has improved my life and health in so many ways. I feel so much better working out each morning before I start my day.
Hang in there. Perserverance brings furtherance.
