During my last quit, I managed to control my weight while taking Wellbutrin. After I stopped taking it, my weight ballooned. I've made feeble attempts to lose the weight, but I'd always go back to my bad ways.
I am doing Atkins now, and have started walking and doing Pilates. The first 2 weeks, I lost 6 pounds. I haven't been on the scale for a couple of weeks, so I'm not sure where I stand now. I refuse to let the scale control me, so I just get on it every once in a while. One thing I've noticed since starting Atkins is that I no longer have the water weight I used to. My ankles would always swell during the day due to water retention, but that has completely gone away. Bonus! I know Atkins is not right for everyone, but it seems to be working for me with no ill affects.
BTW, we can change the name of this forum if you'd like. I had to call it something to create it. So if anyone has any suggestions, let us know.

Happy to see this new forum up and running....thanks, Pattib!
I was always a small woman, and 20 pounds too much is hard to lug around. Also my age (68) is a big factor here....so much muscle is gone, maybe never to be recovered! Five years ago, whe I quit the first time, my energy fell through the floor and I gained about 30 pounds just sitting on my rear. This time it's not quite as bad. I joined "Curves", the womens fitness group, two months ago...getting a little stronger and replacing some fat with muscle.
I'd like to see an exchange of healthy recipes here...some that don't require a major shopping spree!
Good luck with Atkins, Patti. My daughter in law lost a bunch of weight with that plan. I can't live without my noodles!

I probably gained 20+ pounds when I initially quit five years ago. The first year my metabolism was so out of whack and I was so intent on successfully quitting, I didn't worry about it. After that, I was divorced and then was diagnosed with high cholesterol values, so I went on a low fat eating diet and lost weight (I don't own a scale...I go by how my clothes fit ) In the last two years I've taken up exercising the only way I could stand it: walking. I walked for miles! Loved it! Until I discovered biking (and my boyfriend). Now we try to bike a 12 mile round trip bike path by my house a few times a week. My legs are in great shape. My problem now is my middle aged gut and my love for good food. A few weeks ago I was put on blood pressure meds so now I have to watch my salt intake. So I'm here too for good recipes and whatever else we can come up with!!

I can help with low carb recipes, but I don't think that's what you're looking for. I'm sure I have low fat recipes from when hubby had his heart attack. They're just a standard part of my cooking for him now, so they don't seem like anything special. Lots of chicken. He won't eat fish, so lots of chicken, pork and some beef.

Hey, when you begin with recipes please try to find a few that don't call for some exotic ingredients that are only available at health stores. All the diabetic recipes I've found substitute something to act as a sweet or starchy food.
I'm on a low carb diet. Weight peeked at 250. Slowly going down.
I steam a lot of veggies. And try not to eat the high calorie foods too.

hmm, well, the only veggie I like is chocolate. (It comes from a plant, so it must be a veggie ) Seriously, I do like some veggies, but then mess it up with butter and salt. I'm diabetic too, but am not watching my diet and have even quit monitoring my blood. Shame on me

So glad you started this Patti, I hear so much about the carb diet and Atkins. I been kinda scared to try it since I had 3 strokes. Been watching my fat intake, and riding my new bike 8 to 10 miles a day. I lost 5 pounds so far. My problem is night time eating. Replaced cigs with food. Grrrrrrrrr. Love Dorothy.

I am so glad this forum is here too. I have always gained 15-20 pounds each time I quit (2 times for 3 years and with each pregnancy) and that begins the nasty spiral of depression over feeling and looking like a slug, which contributes to eating more.
I am armed this time with my quit aids, and I have been working very hard to get in shape BEFORE quitting. My theory is if I get into the 'habit' of regular fitness perhaps I can substitute exercise rather than high calorie snacks. We shall see....
I tried the South Beach diet (similar to Atkins) for a very short time, and could not do it. I have a hereditary cholesterol problem for which I take daily medication and I am wary of all the meat on this diet.
I would also love to share and get low fat recipes in here. Give me a minute to find them..

Steamed veggies. I've gotten to like broccoli & califlower (?) ....a little carrots, plus the other garden goodies I can steam & put in a salad with Romaine lettuce. And I eat salads at least once a day. Low carbs, count calories, eat fiber....a good start to diet. Dee, exercise & diet are the two largest weapons a diabetic can use to fight the disease. We have to lose weight, a fact of life. Good luck! Jimpops

Hi All, Well i've gained about 10lbs since i quit again in Dec. The first time i quit over 4 yrs ago i gained also. The easiest diet i tried was Thins In. Mostly cutting back on sweets and portions of food. If you can't handle a lot of stress try just eating a smaller portion especially the starches. Of course no sweets for about two weeks. Then there are some you can have. Try splenda instead of sugar. I lost 18 lbs in 3 months on this diet. Now i'm going to go back on it again. Let you know how it goes. Good luck to us all. Don't worry to much about the diet tho. Take little steps at a time. lucy
