Let's just put it out there plainly:
THE ADDICTION LIES TO US:
- it makes us think we want to smoke when it's really our addiction that wants its fix.
- it makes us believe that we can't live without nicotine - we can. It just takes an adjustment period for our bodies to learn how to live without nicotine.
- it makes us think that "just one" won't hurt us - if we could have "just one", we wouldn't be in this mess to begin with!
- it makes us believe that we enjoy smoking - non-smokers and non-addicts don't enjoy smoking! We only THINK we enjoy it because smoking tops up our nicotine levels which reduces our withdrawal symptoms that begin as soon as we butt out. We confuse this relief from withdrawal with enjoyment.
- it makes us forget what we are really doing to ourselves when we smoke. Smoking is causing damage with EACH AND EVERY SICKERETTE we suck down. We are a ticking time bomb when we smoke because the damage IS accumulating with EVERY cigarette we smoke. We know what smoking does to unborn babies... what do you think it's doing to YOU???
- it makes us think it's ok and normal to take dirty half-smoked butts out of ashtrays and light them up, REGARDLESS of who smoked them last. Can we say disgusting?
- it makes us think it's ok to choose to smoke rather than eat when we only have a few dollars on us.
- it makes us forget that smoking is making us look terrible by yellowing our skin, browning our teeth and wrinkling our faces. We look old and sick.
- it makes us believe we aren't strong enough to last through the withdrawal process and we might as well give up and live a happy life even if it kills us. But we ARE strong enough and the addiction WILL end and we WILL go on to lead even HAPPIER lives as a result of quitting.
- it makes us forget how dangerous our second-hand smoke is to those around us. SECOND-HAND SMOKE DAMAGES and KILLS. WE ARE HURTING THE PEOPLE AROUND US WHEN WE SMOKE IN THEIR PRESENCE.
- it makes us believe that we will always feel like crap from quitting, so what's the point if it makes us feel miserable? The quit difficulties actually are quite SHORT-TERM and end sooner than you think. It only FEELS like it lasts forever, but in terms of actual time, it's quite short-lived.
- it makes us think that "just one" will make us feel better. "Just one" actually makes us want "just one more" and the one after that and the one after that. "Just one" can NEVER satisfy us. "Just one" strengthens our next craving, it doesn't eliminate it.
- it makes us think that cigarette smoke doesn't smell that bad. It smells HORRIBLE.
- it makes us believe that if we don't smoke for a while, we can reward ourselves with smoking. Does anyone else see how crazy that is?
- it makes us forget just how much money we are spending on sickerettes - we will spend THOUSANDS of dollars a year to get our fix. Can any of us say that we really couldn't use that money on better things in our lives than toxic poison sticks?
OUR ADDICTIONS LIE.
For once in your life, take the blinders off and refuse to believe all the lies and garbage your addiction is telling you in order to get you to feed it. There is NOTHING good about smoking and there is EVERYTHING good about quitting. STOP BELIEVING THE ADDICTION'S LIES.
