Hi Jason, welcome!
Yeah I saw those in the news too. A nicotine delivery system that still mimics a cigarette.
I don't believe the electronic cigarette is meant for quitting, but rather for smokers to not get blamed for ambient and exhaled smoke.
One of the hardest things about quitting is that hand-to-mouth connection. I'm a big advocate on nicotine patches. But, puffing away on a nictotine stick...I can't see how that makes one quit 'smoking'. All of the motions and addiction fulfilling actions are still there.

Welcome Jason! I tried smoking herbal cigarettes many years ago. I think it might have worked for me as the holding of the cigarette was a big part of smoking for me. However, the public response to the smell was darn right antagonistic so I stopped smoking them. I saw a feature on the news the other night about these things that you hold and pretend to smoke but there is no smoke or anything. It's really just this plastic thing that you hold and puff on and apparnetly is catching on. I don't know. I quit cold turkey. What got me through it is the question I asked myself over and over whenever I wanted a cigarette, and that is: What is harder - quitting smoking now or battling cancer later. As others say, no one ever died from a crave. Well, good luck and I hope you visit us often!

My Uncle is using the electronic cigarette. My mom quit cold turkey 2 months ago, and totally motivated me. I mean, if my mom can do it, surely I can, since I'd been smoking a whole generation shorter? But I'm 6 days in, and I'm craving today. I'd give anythign for that electronic cig, but I don't know if that would just prolong the agony.

There's an electronic gadget for every purpose now, huh? Maybe they can improve on this one, where it will just smoke real ones for us. I always wish we could make nicotine extract, to use in coffee or brownies. Hmmm. I wonder if I could make tobacco brownies? Do people still do that with pot? I just like the smell of tobacco. It's only the smoke that stinks!

It's the Nicorette Inhaler. It's just this plastic thing that you hold and pretend you're smoking. It's quite interesting. It might work for some. Myself, anything resembling smoking is anathema.

I bought my first Electronic Cigarette! Thank you all so much for your help. After carefully reviewing all your posts from here and other forums, I decided to go ahead and give it a shot. I have to say that after a week of using my electronic cigarette, I am VERY happy with it. After a few good recommendations, I ordered a Bloog online, and am very pleased with it. Its unbelievable how close to a real cig it is. I am pretty impressed that the technology actually exists to create such a thing. Ill keep you all posted on how it goes, but for now it looks pretty good. I am at 16mg right now, and plan on slowly reducing to 0 nicotine. I have to say it does feel better knowing that I'm not actually inhaling smoke. They also gave me a "Thank you for your order" discount code, that some of you may be able to use. I'm not sure how long its good for, or how many uses it gets, but its worth a shot for 20% off. Coupon Code: BLOOGJ20 Site: Bloog Electronic CigarettesIll keep you all posted on how it goes, and thanks again!

I don't know about mechanical cigarettes but I know mechanical lungs. Ventilators, they did my breathing for 4 weeks and I managed with God's help to finally breathe on my own again. Over a month in Rehab, still hurting but I'm walking & breathing & talking again. Organic is the way to go.
