I'm a newby getting ready to start my 10th attempt to be free of this destructive habit. I will starting the chantix program again after failing 3 times. After a discussion with my Dr. we both agree the addictive nature of nicotine is not my problem. Have stayed of 3 mos, 2mos, & 4 mos respectively. I'm thinking it has got to be much much deeper than the chemicals. A phschological self destructive tendency that I can't see or deal with. Anybody out there runnng into the same result. I know about triggers, blah, blah, blah. Been working on this for 3 yyears, hypnotherapy, accupuncture, nicoderm, gum etc... It's not like I haven't given it the good ole college try.

Hi cw,
I often joked that I'd quit every night...then wake up the next day and smoke again.
It's good that you haven't given up. Since you're analyzing this, you need to know what made you go smoke each time you quit. I mean there was something at the moment going thru your head that you thought a cigarette would make it all better.
People have relapsed after years. There is something in our mindset that glorifies a cigarette. You have to villanize it. Make it evil. Deny yourself permission to take part in it. All the quit-aids in the world can only help you so far, it is your determination to stay smokeless that carries the day. You must want to be smokeless more than you want to submit to any crave to smoke...no matter what.

CW Congrats for deciding to quit again. You are obviously good at quitting and then slip back into habitual slavery at some point. It is much easier to have enthusiasm and resolve early on in a quit...but only the strong survive the calls from the beast around 3 months. It's very true that the mental part of quitting is much harder than the physical side. Don is absolutely right in what he says.....in other words you have to reprogram yourself and your thinking. For instance...you need to stop believing that there is "something" that keeps you from staying quit...that is just you rationalizing your slips. Do not give yourself permission to smoke...period! Easier said then done...i understand...but instead of giving the ole college try....this time...just do it! Hang out with us...we can help. Best wishes to you

Hi Out There! I am getting ready to start my third month on Chantix. I must say, from day one cigarettes tasted flat, dull. I smoked until day six and have not had one since (just about 2 mos) I found that taking the pill after a good meal, helped with the little bit of discomfort I had in my stomach, helps. I went to my doc yesterday, and he asked me if I wanted another prescription for Chantix, as some people take it longer to "stay quit". My urges from day one, have been minor, so I am going to see how it is, after this one more month of the medicine. Anyone have thoughts on this! Look forward to coming out here for any help! GOOD TO BE FREE!!

hello trudy Congrats on making the decision to gain your freedom. It is good to be free...isn't! I am not to familiar with Chantix and how long you should stay on it....but perhaps one of our members here can shed some light. ( jp?) I would think that if you have any trouble at all you may want to have a prescript handy just in case. The main thing is to stay quit...and you do have the nicotine out of your body by now....it's more a mental thing. You are forming better habits now...and changing your life in a positive way! Keep it going Trudy. Let us know how things are going for you!! _slim

Greetings and salutations billyb!
I can't comment on a Chantix experience but I know there are others here who have. I do notice that Chantix use appears to be increasing so that's gotta say something about its effectiveness. I've heard good things. Whatever it takes to stay quit is a good thing!

Keep us posted billyb ... post when ever you want. Chantix wasn't available when I quit. Zyban, patches, gum, drinking water, screaming .... whar ever it takes.
I think it's good you & your husband have decided to quit at the same time, you're a support group! You might say the couple who quit together, stay together.

billyb, sorry to be so long in a reply. I've got 6 grandkids 2 of which are ready to graduate from high school. 3 sons, 2 smoke. Wish I'd quit earlier and could have been a better role model so they would'nt be smokers. Maybe I'll be a good influence for the grandkids.
Why not join us on the "daily" board? It's sometime inconvient to get to this page.
BTW, who's grouchier during the quit ... you or hubby?
